In 1613 the people of Erl started to perform the Passion plays because of a pledge leading back to the times of the Black Death. They performed in different places. Today’s Passion play house (not heated) has been built in 1959 only for the purpose of the Passion plays. So in 2009 there will be the 50th anniversary of this great house.
The Passion plays take place every six years. About 600 people out of 1400 from our small village actively participate in the Passion plays! The Erl Passion play has some outstanding features: distinctive scene arrangements particularly of the Via Crucis, an actual and modern text, and our own music, composed especially for us (Text: Felix Mitterer - Direction: Markus Plattner). In 2013 there will be the 400th jubilee of the Erl Passion Plays.
