The Passion Play in Mariekerke in Flanders has been realised from the beginning of the 20th century on. Everything takes place on the banks of the Scheldt in a community of fishermen and artisans. Bert Peleman (*1915 †1995) wrote the text for the original Play that was performed for the first time on 28th March 1971, directed by Guido Van Doorslaer (*1943) who in the same spirit wrote the texts for other extensions.
The Passion Play "Kristus aan de Schelde” takes place outdoors during the Passiontide on the quay of the Scheldt. Evening performances with a great framework of sound and light.
