Riogordo (Malaga)

EL PASO´ RIOGORDO´S PASSION PLAY (RE-ENACTION OF JESUS´LIFE AND DEATH) Riogordo is a typical Andalusian white village, situated 35 km north of Malaga, in the region of Axarquia. "Semana Santa”, Holy week, is celebrated with enthusiasm and emotion in the village. Following a tradition that can be traced back to 17th Century, the Passion and death of Christ are re-enacted in a stunning open air spectacle. Since 1951 the ¨Paso¨, or Passion play, has been performed annually, with more than 500 members of the village taking part. The play is set in a customised natural theatre, set on a hillside, of more than 8,000 m2. There are excellent views from all five thousand seats of this colourful pageant. A modern sound system ensures perfect amplification of the performance and music. El Paso de Riogordo has been declared "Fiesta of National Tourist Interest”
