The Waal theatrics can be documentary traced back to almost the year 1791. The stylistically characteristics of the old text and the oral transmission come s from a considerably elder origin which could be in the Black Death time. About the year 1626 raged the Black Death in Waal.
To this time an original particle of the Jesus´cross has been hand over from the castle to the parish church for the purpose of veneration and safe-keeping and Waal became a place of pilgrimage. Furthermore a "Holy-Cross-Brotherhood" was 1665 established.
As well as the beginning of the plays in Waal could also have its root in this painful time. Since that time until present especially theatre plays with Christian contents besides the Passion plays were performed.
