Beyond Borders

European Cross-Border Projects

Europe is shaped by borders – and by people who choose to cross them.

For centuries, the presentation of the Passion of Christ has been a shared European language, expressing suffering and hope, memory and reconciliation. It connects communities across national, cultural and linguistic boundaries.

In a EUROPASSION members’ survey on the future of the association, the promotion of cross-border projects emerged as one of the top three priorities. At the same time, members clearly expressed the wish for no rigid frameworks or obligations, but rather an open space in which interested groups can contribute with their own ideas and initiatives.

Beyond Borders was created in response to this shared vision.

An Open European Space – Not a Fixed Programme

Beyond Borders is not a formal programme and not a set of predefined project formats.

It is an open European space for Passion communities that wish to explore cooperation beyond borders in their own way.

EUROPASSION aims to:

  • encourage dialogue and partnership between Passion communities across Europe,

  • give visibility to cross-border initiatives,

  • support exchange and mutual learning,

  • respect local traditions, historical contexts and creative freedom.

There are no mandatory models to follow.

Each project finds its own language, form and rhythm.

What Cross-Border Can Mean

Cross-border cooperation may take many different forms, including:

  • joint Passion performances involving communities from different countries,

  • shared remembrance in historically divided regions,

  • multilingual and multicultural expressions,

  • long-term partnerships or one-time encounters,

  • artistic, cultural, spiritual or community-based initiatives.

All these approaches are welcome.

Diversity is not an obstacle – it is the strength of Europe.

Project Example

Calvario / Kalvarija – Beyond the Barbed Wire

Gorizia – Nova Gorica | European Capital of Culture 2025

A powerful example of cross-border cooperation is the project “Calvario / Kalvarija – Beyond the Barbed Wire”, realised within the framework of GO!2025, the European Capital of Culture.

On 14 June 2025, Italian and Slovenian communities came together in Gorizia and Nova Gorica to create a joint living representation of the Passion of Christ. Starting from the dramatic history of a city once divided by war, barbed wire and the Iron Curtain, the Passion became a shared narrative of reconciliation and hope.

Where borders once symbolised separation, the performance created spaces of encounter. Languages, traditions and civic engagement came together to form a deeply European experience.

This project shows how the Passion can become a living act of memory, dialogue and peace across borders.

Inspiration, Not a Model

Calvario / Kalvarija is presented as an example, not as a blueprint.

Cross-border projects within EUROPASSION may differ in size, form and focus, reflecting the richness of local realities.

Beyond Borders exists to inspire, connect and support – not to prescribe.
