The main celebrations of the 33rd anniversary of the restored passion plays occur over two Saturdays in June 2026. The schedule is as follows:

  • 18:00: Solemn holy mass at St. Catherine's Church, featuring the Musica Viva Choir and the Schwarzenberg Grenadier Guard.

  • 20:30: Passion play performance at the natural amphitheater.

• June 13, 2026:

  • 14:00: Musica Bohemica concert at St. Catherine's Church.

  • 16:30: Guided walk through the passion history with Mgr. Jan Palkovič.

  • 19:30: Passion play performance at the natural amphitheater.

Historical Significance of the Passion Plays

The Hořice Passion Plays gained global fame in the late 19th century, with a dedicated theater built in 1893 that attracted around 40,000 international visitors. Notably, in 1897, an American company filmed one of the performances, marking the first film created in Central Europe. The tradition faced challenges during the world wars and was suppressed after 1948 by the communist regime. However, local enthusiasts successfully restored the passion plays in 1990, leading to the first modern premiere in 1993. Impressively, since 2024, the plays have been recognized as an intangible cultural heritage of the Czech Republic, with efforts underway for UNESCO recognition.
