St. Margarethen 100: Marking a Historic Milestone
On May 23, 2026, the town of St. Margarethen celebrated a remarkable milestone with the world premiere of "Miriam – Love is as Strong as Death." This production not only marks the centenary of the St. Margarethen Passion Play but also introduces a fresh narrative centered around Mary Magdalene. Set against the dramatic backdrop of the local quarry, this event drew a crowd of around 2,000, including notable regional political leaders, church figures, and various cultural icons, all eager to witness this significant performance.
A New Interpretation of an Age-Old Tale
Directed by the talented Prof. Manfred Waba and penned by Father Dr. Richard Geier, "Miriam" offers a unique reinterpretation of the traditional passion narrative. By placing Mary Magdalene—Miriam—at the forefront, the play shifts the lens of this ancient story. This fresh perspective, 20 years after the events of the gospel, explores profound themes of memory, love, suffering, and faith through a female voice that has often been overlooked in conventional retellings.
Emotional Resonance and Community Engagement
The premiere was an emotionally charged experience, featuring Renée Gallo-Daniel in the titular role, supported by Andreas Schalling as Jesus and a large ensemble cast composed of skilled performers and dedicated volunteers. The production was further enhanced by a poignant musical score crafted by composer Albin Rudisch, delivering a blend of cinematic intensity and delicate moments that echo the profound themes explored in the narrative.
This innovative iteration resonates deeply with the established passion play tradition of St. Margarethen, which has been evolving since its inception in 1926. As the anniversary edition rolls out, it seeks to engage new audiences while paying homage to its historical roots and diverse artistic interpretations over the decades.
From May 23 until July 12, 2026, audiences can enjoy performances on weekends and public holidays at the Ruffini stage, welcoming them to experience the passion story anew through this invigorated and powerful lens.
Last but not least, St. Margarethen will host the Europassion Congress in 2026 so all Europassion groups will be welcome to join this fantastic anniversary on the first weekend of July.
